Set a gift limit before the season starts

A ceiling agreed early removes the December panic and the January bill.

1 minute

Talk with family or friends about a spending limit, a name draw, or a shared meal instead of a pile of gifts. Agreeing in October is easier than competing in the shop in December. Thoughtful gifts are often cheaper when you have time to make, plan, or buy them on a real discount.

For children, ask relatives to contribute to a savings or education account if the house is already full of things. Experiences, a zoo or museum membership, or a homemade meal can replace objects that will be forgotten. Keep one small treat if that is part of how you celebrate. The limit is there to protect the month, not to cancel the day.

Start this week

Message the people you exchange gifts with and propose a number. Put that amount aside monthly so the season is already funded.
