Read the credit report you can get

Errors and old accounts can raise the price of borrowing. In many places you can request the report for free.

In many countries you can request your credit report on a regular schedule without paying a service. Read it for accounts you do not recognize, limits that look wrong, and late payments that are not yours. Dispute the mistakes with the bureau and the lender. A cleaner report can lower the rate you are offered later.

Paying every bill on time and keeping card balances well below the limit are the everyday habits that shape the score. Closing an old account in a hurry can sometimes shorten your history. If you are unsure, ask the bureau or a counselor before you close anything.
