Getting started

Name the goal and the date

A named amount with a deadline is easier to protect than a vague wish to save more.

1 minute

Pick one short goal you could finish inside a year, and one long goal that can wait. A short goal might be a bill you know is coming, a repair, or a trip. A long goal might be a home deposit, education, or retirement. Write the amount and the month you want it.

Divide what you still need by the number of months. That monthly figure is the plan. If it is larger than you can send, lengthen the date or shrink the goal. A smaller goal you reach will teach the habit. A huge goal you abandon will not.

Start this week

Write one sentence: “I am saving [amount] by [month] for [name].” Put it where you will see it on payday.
