Work and windfalls

Take the full employer match

If your workplace adds money when you contribute to a retirement plan, contribute at least enough to receive all of it.

1 minute

Many employers match part of what you pay into a workplace retirement plan. The names differ by country. If you contribute less than the amount that receives the full match, you are declining pay. Ask human resources what the match is, when it vests, and how to raise your contribution.

This is long-term money. Do not plan to spend it next month, and do not treat this page as investment advice. If you are choosing funds and feel unsure, ask a qualified adviser who is not paid only to sell one product. Build the short-term cushion alongside this so a surprise does not force you to cash the retirement money in and pay a penalty.

Email HR one question: “What contribution gets the full match, and am I there?” Then change the form if you are not.
